What Is A Pediatrician?

It may be common knowledge, but in its most simplistic form a pediatrician is a physician for children. Pediatricians such as Dr. Milan R. Kapadia of Quakerbridge Pediatrics manage the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their children patients. They provide care for children at every stage of growth and development.

Pediatricians Provide:

  • Preventative health care for healthy children of all ages
  • Medical care for children who are acutely or chronically ill

It is common practice for pediatricians to focus on babies, children, adolescents, and young adults from birth to the age of 21 in order to:

  • Reduce infant and child mortality
  • Manage and control infectious disease
  • Cultivate healthy lifestyles and practices
  • Ease the difficulties children with chronic conditions face daily

Pediatricians diagnose and often treat:

  • Injuries
  • Infections
  • Malignancies
  • Genetic defects
  • Organic diseases and dysfunctions

In addition to physical conditions and well-being, pediatrics often dedicate time to the prevention, early detection, and management of other issues that affect children, including:

  • Behavioral challenges
  • Development disorders
  • Social stress
  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Functional problems

Education For Pediatricians

After successfully graduating from medical school, primary care pediatricians must complete three years of education in an accredited pediatric residency program before they may practice. This pediatric residency training will focus on care of the whole infant, child, adolescent, and young adult. After the completion of the pediatric residency, the pediatrician is eligible for board certification by the American Board of Pediatrics. To become certified, the pediatrician must successfully complete a comprehensive written examination. Once certified, the pediatrician must pass re-certification every seven years.
